The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Akwa Ibom State Council, Comrade Nsibiet John , has called on the Akwa Ibom State Government to ensure that companies seeking to establish operations in the state sign properly structured Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) that clearly define their obligations to host communities and the state.

Comrade John made the appeal on Thursday, October 29, 2026, during an inter-ministerial meeting involving the Ministries of Justice, Trade and Investment at Government House, Uyo, where he emphasised the need for clear agreements to promote responsible business practices, protect host communities and address environmental concerns.

He stressed the importance of establishing clear terms of engagement with incoming companies, particularly in areas relating to environmental protection, oil spillage, compensation for affected communities and liabilities arising from environmental damage.

The NUJ chairman also advocated regular roundtable discussions involving the government, relevant stakeholders, host communities and corporate organisations to encourage dialogue, resolve disputes and facilitate mutually beneficial agreements.

According to him, proactive engagement and clearly defined contractual obligations would help prevent avoidable conflicts and ensure that companies operating in Akwa Ibom State conduct their activities responsibly.

He further underscored the need for accountability in managing environmental incidents, noting that agreements should clearly specify responsibility for damages, environmental remediation, compensation and other liabilities arising from corporate operations.

Comrade John also commended Governor Umo Eno for increasing the students’ bursary from ₦50,000 to ₦200,000, with students undertaking professional courses to receive ₦250,000.

He described the increase as a welcome intervention that would provide financial relief to students and their families, while supporting access to education and the pursuit of academic and professional qualifications.

The NUJ chairman noted that sustained investment in students’ welfare was essential to educational development and urged the state government to maintain policies and programmes that support young people and improve their opportunities for success.

He called for stronger collaboration among the government, the media, the private sector and other stakeholders to promote sustainable development, protect community interests and improve the welfare of residents across Akwa Ibom State.
