In a major step toward decentralizing security operations in Nigeria, the Delta State House of Assembly has officially approved the constitutional amendment bill seeking to establish a state police.

The decision forms part of the ongoing sixth alteration to the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, aimed at granting state governments legal powers to create and maintain localized policing structures.

No member voted against the proposal or abstained during plenary on Tuesday, October 20, 2026.

For the state police proposal to become law, at least 24 out of Nigeria’s 36 State Houses of Assembly (a two-thirds majority) must approve the constitutional amendment before it is transmitted to the President for assent.
