Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps recently visited the office of the First Lady, and conversations between the Coordinator, Lady Helen Eno Obareki and the Akwa Ibom State Sector Commander, Corps Commander Felicia Kalu, centered around creating safer roads in Akwa Ibom with Zero fatalities.

The Corp Commander informed Lady Obareki of plans by the command to focus on the implementation of the 4 E’s – “Actually, the job of the Road Safety is to ensure a Nigeria with Zero fatalities arising from road traffic crashes. Accidents will surely happen, but we are looking forward to a time when those crashes do not lead to death. And to achieve that, we need to focus on the four E’s, which is Engineering, Enforcement, Education and Emergency care (that is rescue).”
She called for collaboration with the office of the First Lady identified areas in need including Signages,
Road bumps and other road safety infrastructure; setting up of road safety clubs in schools; carrying out advocacy in churches on Sundays and motor parks (early morning cry); as well public enlightenment campaigns in Markets.

Responding, Lady Helen Eno Obareki assured the FRSC officials of support from the office of the First Lady in Akwa Ibom State, towards achieving its mandate and creating a lasting impact on road safety, specifically in the construction of additional zebra crossings at strategic locations across the state to reduce road accidents and improve pedestrian safety.
The Coordinator who promised to donate reflective school bags to pupils, as part of efforts to enhance the visibility and safety of school children on the roads, however urged officers of the Corps to maintain professionalism, civility and decorum in the course of enforcement and public sensitization.
“Decorum in enforcement is actually a really serious issue. Why are people so terrified once they see you on the roads? Why does your office come with such a reaction from individuals. I think we need a lot of sensitisation to change that narrative and public opinion. Let us have a civil conversation when we meet you on the road, let us know that you are our friends.”
Lady Obareki also assured the FRSC team of support and access: “I’m ready to partner with you on all the advocacy and sensitisations that you want to carry out. The office of the first lady can only be a part of that if you carry us along. So as you’re going to schools to set up Road Safety clubs for students, we can have representation from this office, or the Golden Initiative for All, GIFA”, she added.
Corp Commander Felicia Kalu is the 24th Sector Commander of the FRSC to be posted to Akwa Ibom State and the second female to occupy the office.
