Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has emerged as the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress for the 2027 general election after defeating former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, and former banker, Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, in the party’s direct primary election.

The result, announced Wednesday night via the party’s official X handle, showed Atiku securing a landslide victory with 1,855,787 votes, while Amaechi polled 509,397 votes and Hayatu-Deen garnered 180,903 votes.

According to the party, a total of 2,546,457 votes were cast from its 3,113,599 registered members who participated in the nationwide exercise held across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

A breakdown of the results revealed that Atiku defeated Amaechi with a margin of 1,346,390 votes and led Hayatu-Deen by 1,674,884 votes.

The ADC presidential primary process began on Monday, May 25, 2026, with the party adopting the direct primary method after the three leading aspirants reportedly rejected calls to step down for a consensus candidate.

Although an affirmation process was initially proposed, party leaders said the direct primary option was eventually adopted in compliance with the Electoral Act 2026.
