The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has announced the arrest of a 72-year-old man, Monday Maurice Okoko, in connection with the discovery of a cache of firearms believed to have been used in criminal activities across the state.
In a statement issued on Saturday, April 26, 2025, by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, the Command disclosed that the operation took place in Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area during a coordinated raid in the early hours of April 26, 2025.
According to the statement, the raid was conducted around 5:15 a.m. and led to the apprehension of Okoko, who is suspected of maintaining a criminal armory.
A subsequent search of his residence yielded a significant number of weapons, including one locally made revolver pistol, one cut-to-size locally made pistol, one single-barrel fabricated gun, one LAR locally fabricated gun, and five Dane guns. Additionally, gunpowder and Borries ammunition were recovered from the scene.
The Police Command confirmed that a preliminary investigation is currently underway, and efforts are being intensified to track down other members of the suspected gang believed to have been using the seized weapons to perpetrate crimes across Akwa Ibom State.
The Command assured the public of its commitment to dismantling criminal networks and maintaining security throughout the state.
