The Akwa Ibom State Government has assured National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, members deployed to the state of adequate protection from harassment and maltreatment by undesirable groups or individuals.
The state governor, Umo Eno, gave the assurance during the swearing-in ceremony of the 2025 Batch ‘A’ Stream 1 corps members, held at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Ikot Itie Udung, in Nsit-Antai Local Government Area on Friday, April 25, 2025, according to ThePUNCH reports.
“The Akwa Ibom State Government will continue to fulfil its responsibility of providing every one of you with the necessary opportunities to contribute to the overall growth of our economy. We are consciously taking all necessary steps to ensure that your lives and property, including those of other citizens, are protected against all forms of harassment and maltreatment from disgruntled groups or individuals,” the governor said.
Governor Eno, who was represented by the Commissioner for Youth Development, Dr Ekerete Ekanem, reminded the corps members to build bridges of unity across linguistic, religious, ethnic, and cultural boundaries, emphasising that Nigeria is looking up to them for improved prospects and refreshing change.
He added, “As stakeholders in the Nigerian project, it is incumbent on you to continue to build bridges across linguistic, religious, ethnic, and cultural boundaries, knowing full well that Nigerians are looking up to you to bring about significantly improved prospects and a refreshing change.”
The governor, who promised to renovate the dilapidated infrastructure of the orientation camp, also appealed to them to cultivate a sound work ethic and remain open to learning new things throughout their service year.
In his remarks, the Commissioner for Youth Development, Dr Ekerete Ekanem, represented by the Director of Youth Development in the Ministry, Mr Emmanuel Akpabio, urged corps members to discard stereotyped information and preconceived notions about the state, and to be ready to learn, unlearn, and relearn. He reminded them to contribute their quota to the development of the state, both individually and collectively.
The State Coordinator of the NYSC, Mr Sam Pepple, while welcoming guests, disclosed that a total of 1,600 corps members had been registered for service.
While thanking the governor for his support of the scheme, he assured that the NYSC would continue to rely on the magnanimous support of the state government as always and the hospitality of all residents in order to succeed in its daunting but surmountable tasks.
