The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast thunderstorms across the country from Sunday through Tuesday.
In its weather outlook released on Saturday in Abuja, NiMet predicts localized thunderstorms over parts of Taraba, Adamawa, and southern Kaduna States during the afternoon and evening on Sunday.
The agency indicated that the North Central region would experience partly cloudy skies in the morning, with isolated thunderstorms expected later in Plateau, the Federal Capital Territory, Nasarawa, Kwara, Niger, and Kogi states.
The southern region will see cloudy skies in the morning, with localized thunderstorms predicted in parts of Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Delta States. Afternoon and evening storms are expected across Anambra, Oyo, Ondo, Edo, Imo, Abia, Ekiti, Rivers, Cross River, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, and Delta States.
For Monday, NiMet predicts sunny skies for the northern region, with the exception of isolated thunderstorms expected in parts of Adamawa, Kaduna, and Taraba States later in the day.
In the North Central region, sunny skies with few clouds are expected in the morning, followed by isolated thunderstorms in Plateau, the Federal Capital Territory, Benue, Kogi, Kwara, and Nasarawa states. The southern region will experience cloudy skies with intervals of sunshine, alongside morning thunderstorms in parts of Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Cross River States. Afternoon and evening thunderstorms are expected in various southern states, including Lagos, Bayelsa, and Delta.
On Tuesday, NiMet forecasts sunny skies with few clouds over the northern region in the morning, with slim chances of isolated thunderstorms in Taraba. Later, isolated thunderstorms are expected in parts of Taraba, Adamawa, and Kaduna States. The North Central region will see similar weather conditions, with thunderstorms anticipated in parts of Benue and Kogi States in the afternoon.
In the southern region, cloudy skies will prevail in the morning, with isolated thunderstorms in Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Lagos States. Thunderstorms will likely affect areas such as Abia, Imo, Ebonyi, and others during the afternoon and evening.
NiMet advises the public to seek cool, well-ventilated spaces and stay hydrated to avoid heat stress, as temperatures could rise in many parts of the country. It also urged people to take health precautions, including vaccination against meningitis and maintaining hygiene practices to reduce the risk of infections.
“Public safety is crucial during this period, and airline operators should ensure they consult NiMet’s specific weather updates for flight planning,” NiMet stated.
