1. Irresponsible Use of Social Media Fuelling Iinsecurity, Say NIPR, NSCDC
The Nigerian Institute of Public Relations , NIPR and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, have warned that irresponsible use of social media and the spread of misinformation are worsening insecurity in the country.
They spoke last week during a nationwide roadshow organised by the NIPR in Abuja ahead of the 2026 World Public Relations Forum, WPRF, scheduled for November.
The NIPR FCT chapter commenced its sensitisation from the Zoological Garden, Area 1, Abuja, to encourage responsible communication and verification of information before sharing.
FCT Commandant of the NSCDC, Dr. Olusola Odumosu, said circulating unverified content could trigger panic and attacks on innocent citizens.
“Somebody would just wake up from somewhere, bring a video that is as old as 20 years, where maybe a crisis happened, and you just tag it as happening now in Kano State. Such irresponsible communication heats up the polity,” Odumosu said.
He said many Nigerians share content without confirming its authenticity, warning that such acts endanger public safety. BuyMaps
“People should get to know that it is not too good to send out information that can heat the polity, send out information that can make people start attacking themselves, send out information that can encourage banditry or kidnapping and all of that,” he said.
Odumosu said the theme of the WPRF, “Responsible Communication: The Voice of the World,” was timely.
Chairman of the National Planning Committee for WPRF Abuja 2026, Dr. Suleiman Haruna, said social media and artificial intelligence have created new threats to information integrity.
He said the forum would deliberate on how information is produced and consumed in the age of AI.
A member of the planning committee, Inimfon Etuk, said the roadshow was to create awareness for the global forum which will bring together PR professionals and strategic communication experts.
Chairman, NIPR FCT Chapter, Stanley Ogadigo, said Nigeria secured the hosting right after a competitive bid and will be hosting the WPRF for the first time alongside the 37th annual conference of the African Public Relations Association, APRA.
He urged Nigerians and corporate organisations to support the forum as a national project.
2. ICPC Rises to Second in 2026 Transparency Index with 80.13% Score
The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, has emerged as Nigeria’s second-highest-rated federal institution in the 2026 Transparency and Integrity Index, TII, improving its score from 78.13 per cent in 2025 to 80.13 per cent.
The latest assessment by the Centre for Fiscal Transparency and Public Integrity, CeFTPI, evaluated 518 federal institutions nationwide, with the ICPC ranking among only four organisations that attained the index’s “Excellent” performance category of 70 per cent and above.
The ICPC statement announcing the development was signed by its Head of Media and Public Communications, J. Okor Odey.
The result represents an improvement for the anti-corruption agency, which placed third among 575 institutions assessed in 2025. Its score increased by two percentage points in 2026, moving it to second position nationally.
Reacting to the ranking, ICPC Chairman, Dr Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN, said the independent assessment was an encouragement for the commission to deepen ongoing institutional reforms and strengthen transparency in its operations.
“I am delighted that the progress we are making as a Commission is being independently recognised,” Aliyu said.
3. EFCC’s Convictions, Recoveries Justify My Confidence, Says President Tinubu
Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu has commended the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, for its efforts in tackling economic and financial crimes and corruption, saying the agency has justified the confidence reposed in it.
According to the anti-graft agency in a statement on Friday, Tinubu gave the commendation on Friday, October 2, 2026, in Awka, Anambra State, during the commissioning of a new Zonal Directorate of the EFCC.
Represented by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, the President said the commission’s achievements in convictions, recoveries and other areas provided evidence of its performance.
“Supporting the EFCC is not particularly difficult. The agency has consistently demonstrated that the confidence reposed on it is well founded. Without mincing words, the evidential proof of the EFCC’s success speaks loudly in convictions secured, assets and properties recovered,” he said.
Tinubu said the commission’s activities aligned with the Renewed Hope Agenda of his administration, particularly its focus on economic reform and good governance.
“When we came in three years ago, I highlighted nine major focal areas of my administration. Two of which are reforming the economy for sustained and inclusive growth and promotion of good governance. The anti-graft agency compliments this agenda as they are focused on accountability and transparency and appropriate deployment of resources,” he said.
4. Army, Police, DSS Launch Aggressive Operation To Rescue 20 Abducted NYSC Members In Imo
The Nigerian Army, Police, Department of State Services, DSS, and other security agencies have intensified search-and-rescue operations to secure the release of 20 prospective National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, members abducted along the Owerri–Onitsha Road in Imo State, security analyst and counter-insurgency expert, Zagazola Makama, reported.
The victims were reportedly kidnapped on October 1 around Umunoha, with security forces subsequently launching coordinated operations to track down the perpetrators and rescue the abductees.
Makama said troops of the 34 Artillery Brigade, alongside personnel of the Nigerian Navy, Nigerian Air Force, Nigeria Police Force, DSS, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and local vigilantes, launched an offensive operation in Amakohia Forest at about 5:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 3.
The operation followed intelligence gathered during efforts to trace the kidnappers and establish their possible locations.
The sources said the kidnappers had contacted the families of seven victims using telephone numbers belonging to the abducted persons and demanded a ransom of N50 million for each victim.
Operatives of the DSS reportedly geolocated the telephone numbers used for the ransom calls, providing intelligence to support efforts to track the suspects.
5. Imo Kidnap: Captors Assault NYSC Members, Cut Ransom From ₦50m to ₦5m Each
Gunmen have reduced the ransom demanded for the release of the 20 kidnapped prospective National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, members from N50m to N5m each, thereby bringing the total amount to N100m.
The kidnappers on Friday, October 2, set a 24-hour deadline for the payment of the N50m ransom. The ultimatum expires on Sunday, October 4.
One of the affected parents, Alimot Akande, in a telephone chat with the Nigerian Tribune disclosed that the amount has been downwardly review to N5m each.
She stated that the kidnappers established contact with the respective parents of the captives with their mobile telephone lines.
The distraught mother lamented that the victims are being subjected to rigorous torture as they are being asked to impress upon their parents that failure to meet up with their fresh demand may result in something else.
“They are still demanding N5 million. They have come down to N5 million each.”
“The total amount that is being expected to be paid by the affected parents has reduced from one billion naira to one hundred million naira.
When asked to describe the situation from her perspective, Akande said, “It has been horrible, scary and overwhelming.”
The situation, according to her, became more disturbing after she spoke with her sister and learnt that the abductors had begun beating the victims.
“Sir, we appeal to the government to please assist us in getting them rescued out of that place. When I spoke to my sister, they started beating them since yesterday,” she said.
Asked whether the female corps members were also being assaulted, she said the kidnappers had shown no restraint.
“They are not sparing anybody. They are beating all of them,” she said.
6. Nigerian Navy Uncovers 40,000-litre Illegal Refinery In Rivers, Arrests Three Suspects
A joint operation by the Nigerian Navy and the Federal Government Inter-Agency Task Force on Petroleum Theft has uncovered a 40,000-litre-capacity illegal refinery in Bonny Island, Rivers State and arrested three suspects.
The authorities said the illegal refinery was hidden deep within the creeks in Bonny.
The operation followed actionable intelligence coordinated through the Joint Intelligence Monitoring Team, involving personnel from several security and intelligence agencies.
Speaking to newsmen in Bonny on Friday last week, the Commanding Officer of the Nigerian Navy Forward Operating Base, Bonny, Captain Stanley Umeh, described the discovery as the biggest his team had made since he assumed control of the command in March 2026.
Umeh said Navy gunboats departed Bonny carrying operatives into the creeks, where the team trekked through dense vegetation before arriving at the clandestine facility.
“This discovery here is a product of long-time synergy between the base and other security agencies within the island and outside. It has been a product of actionable intelligence over time,” he stated.
Umeh explained that unlike many illegal refineries previously encountered, where crude had already been deposited or processed, the latest discovered facility was still at a preparatory stage.
Umeh said the discovery was a major boost to the fight against crude oil theft aimed at increasing Nigeria’s crude oil production.
“This discovery is a plus to the fight against crude oil theft in Nigeria, towards increasing the production or crude sales production in the country,” he said.
Also speaking, the Head of Investigation of the Special Prosecution Team of the Inter-Agency Task Force on Petroleum Theft, Omar John Sini, said the discovery was the result of collaboration between intelligence, security and law enforcement agencies.
Sini said the task force, inaugurated by the Federal Government on March 1, 2025, was established to investigate and prosecute illicit activities in the country’s hydrocarbon sector.
7. NDLEA Arrest Italy-Bound Bizman With 4.8kg Cocaine In Lagos
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, intercepted a 38-year-old businessman, Philip Tunde, with 4.80 kilogrammes of cocaine concealed in the soles of shoes and railings of travelling bags at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.
In a statement signed by Femi Babafemi, Director, Media and Advocacy, NDLEA Headquarters, Abuja, the agency said Tunde was arrested on Sunday, September 27, 2026, at the joint screening point of Terminal 2 while preparing to board a Royal Air Maroc flight to Milan, Italy.
A thorough search of the suspect led to the recovery of 16 parcels of white powder concealed in the soles of eight pairs of trainers and canvas shoes, as well as 195 wraps of the same substance hidden in the railings of four travelling bags.
The substances tested positive for cocaine, with a combined weight of 4.80kg.
During interrogation, Tunde claimed he paid N16 million in cash for the cocaine concealed in the shoes, while the consignment hidden in the bags was intended for delivery to his partner in Italy.
He also said he raised the money from compensation paid to him following an injury sustained at a plastic manufacturing company in Italy, where he lost the tips of two fingers.
