Troops of the Nigerian Army have rescued some prospective National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, members abducted by suspected kidnappers along the Onitsha–Owerri road in Imo State.
According to PR Nigeria reports, the incident occurred at about 6:30 a.m. on October 1 at Umonuwa village in Mbaise Local Government Area, following an attack on two commercial buses conveying the prospective corps members.
Preliminary reports indicated that the assailants abducted about 30 prospective corps members travelling in the two buses before troops of the 34 Artillery Brigade responded to the incident and rescued some of the victims.
Following the development, the Army, in collaboration with the Nigerian Navy, Nigerian Air Force, NAF, Nigeria Police Force, NPF and Department of State Services, DSS, launched a coordinated operation to track down the perpetrators and secure the release of the remaining victims.
The rescued prospective corps members were subsequently handed over to the DSS for debriefing, profiling and further assistance.
Security agencies have continued operations in the area as efforts intensify to locate the remaining victims and apprehend those responsible for the abduction.
Further details are expected as the operation progresses.
