Three soldiers and a forest guard have been killed after suspected Boko Haram insurgents attacked a military base in Garaha-Mojili, Hong Local Government Area of Adamawa State.
As reported by Daily Post, the attackers reportedly stormed the military position around midnight on Wednesday, hours before Nigeria marked its 66th Independence anniversary, triggering a fierce gun battle with the troops.
The insurgents were said to have arrived on motorcycles, with each motorcycle carrying heavily armed fighters, according to the Chairman of Hong Local Government Area, Aliyu Yerima Sa’ad Hong.
The council chairman disclosed that 10 other soldiers sustained injuries during the confrontation and were taken to the Federal Medical Centre in Hong for treatment.
He also said two women were reportedly abducted during the attack, while several insurgents were believed to have suffered gunshot wounds as troops engaged them.
According to Sa’ad Hong, the attackers who were killed had their bodies evacuated by their colleagues as the surviving insurgents fled the scene.
The council boss described the deaths of the security personnel as painful, particularly as the incident occurred on the eve of the country’s Independence Day celebration.
He said the local government had taken responsibility for the burial arrangements of the slain forest guard and settled the medical expenses of the injured soldiers.
The chairman added that the council remained concerned about the security situation in the area and expressed sympathy with the families and colleagues of those killed in the attack.
