The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has announced October 9, 2026, as the commencement date for the nationwide collection of Permanent Voter Cards, PVCs, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, disclosed this on Monday, September 28, in Kaduna during the North-West Zonal Interactive Meeting with Staff and Readiness Assessment for the 2027 General Election.
Amupitan said the recent voter registration exercise conducted by the commission produced more than 10.7 million new registrations across the country.
He stressed the need to address bottlenecks affecting the distribution of PVCs at the Local Government Area level, warning that delays could prevent eligible citizens from collecting their cards and ultimately disenfranchise them.
The INEC chairman said the commission was also refining its technological systems to improve the electoral process ahead of the 2027 elections.
According to him, the improvements include voter verification and result transmission processes, as well as the commission’s Result Management Systems.
Amupitan also disclosed that INEC had introduced the eEC8A as part of efforts to strengthen its result management and improve the handling of election results.
He said the commission was implementing a “Zero-Failure” approach to election logistics, covering the early deployment of sensitive and non-sensitive materials, their movement to designated locations, security coordination and the training of ad-hoc election personnel.
The announcement comes as INEC intensifies preparations for the 2027 general elections, with the commission expected to focus on ensuring eligible voters can collect their PVCs while strengthening its technology, logistics and personnel arrangements ahead of the polls.
