Terrorists have reportedly stormed Maburya community in Mariga LGA of Niger State, abducting more than 100 residents in a fresh mass kidnapping that has heightened concerns over the worsening security situation in the area.

According to counter-insurgency reporter Bakatsine, the attack occurred on Saturday night, September 12, 2026, with the terrorists reportedly targeting residents who had fled their homes and taken refuge in different locations around the community.

Local sources told the reporter that some residents escaped into nearby hills, riverbanks and other hiding places after the attackers invaded the community. However, the terrorists reportedly tracked down some of those hiding and abducted them, Bakatsine reported.

The attackers were also said to have continued moving around Maburya after the initial abductions, searching for more residents who may have escaped into surrounding areas.

The exact number of people abducted remained unclear as of the time of filing the report. However, local sources cited by Bakatsine put the number at more than 100, with efforts ongoing to establish the identities and precise number of victims.

The latest attack has added to a growing wave of mass abductions reported across Mariga Local Government Area and surrounding communities. Gulbin Boka, Mohoro and Shadadi have also witnessed recent attacks and abductions, according to local reports.

The renewed attacks have left residents facing growing insecurity, with some communities reportedly forced to abandon their homes and seek refuge in hills, riverbanks and other difficult-to-reach locations in an attempt to escape terrorist attacks.

The reported abduction also raises fresh concerns over the ability of security agencies to protect communities in the affected areas, particularly as terrorists continue to exploit remote settlements and vulnerable residents.

As of the time of this report, there was no official statement from the Niger State Government, police or other security agencies confirming the number of people abducted in Maburya. Further details are expected as local authorities and security agencies establish the scale of the attack.
