The National Examinations Council (NECO) has released the results of the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), with a total of 186,291 candidates participating in the nationwide examination conducted across Nigeria and five foreign countries.
The Council announced that the examination, which commenced on April 20 and ended on April 30, was successfully conducted in 12 subjects across the 36 states of the federation, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and five foreign countries.
Approving the release of the results at the 2026 BECE Award Committee Meeting held at NECO’s headquarters in Minna, Niger State, the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Alausa, expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the examination and the processes leading to the release of the results.
Represented by the Chairperson of the Award Committee and Director of Basic Education in the Federal Ministry of Education, Dr. Folake David, the minister commended NECO for ensuring a seamless exercise and maintaining the integrity of the examination process.
He said: “The successful release of the results reflects the commitment of the Council and all stakeholders to ensuring credible and timely assessment of learners at the basic education level.”
In a move aimed at ensuring that candidates are not denied progression to the next stage of their education due to shortcomings in key subjects, the Award Committee approved July 22 and 23, 2026, for the conduct of the BECE Re-sit Examination in Mathematics and English Studies.
According to the Council, the initiative provides affected candidates with another opportunity to remedy the deficiencies and obtain the required certification for placement into Senior Secondary School One (SSS1) without having to repeat an entire academic session.
The Council reiterated its commitment to promoting access to quality education and supporting the smooth transition of learners from the basic to the senior secondary level.
