Protests broke out in parts of Oyo State on May 2, 2026, following reports that officers of the Nigerian Police Force fatally shot a man during an operation.
According to a post by human rights activist Rinu Oduala, the victim, identified as Yehuza Umar, was allegedly killed during a stop-and-search exercise. She claimed the operation was being used to extort money from him before the shooting occurred.

“Nigeria police officer shoots another Nigerian, Yehuza Umar, dead in Oyo State, days after Mene Ogidi was executed in Delta,” she wrote.
Oduala further alleged that the officers involved were carrying out an illegal stop-and-search at the time of the incident.
As of filing this report, the Oyo State Police Command has not released an official statement addressing the allegation.
The incident comes days after a similar case in Delta State, where a 28-year-old man, Mene Ogidi, was killed by a police officer in Effurun, sparking widespread outrage.
A viral video from the Delta incident showed a police officer, identified as Assistant Superintendent of Police Nuhu Usman, shooting the restrained suspect at close range. The footage triggered public anger and led to the officer’s arrest.
The incident occurred on a Sunday in Effurun, where Ogidi was seen seated on the ground with his hands tied behind his back, pleading for his life. Speaking in Pidgin English, he claimed a friend in Sapele had sent him a package containing a locally made pistol without his knowledge and offered to take officers to the individual.
“Officers, abeg, I go tell you everything. Na, my friend deceived me. E dey Sapele. I’ll carry you to the place,” Ogidi begged.
Despite his pleas, an officer in plain clothes raised his rifle and shot him. Ogidi collapsed as bystanders watched.
Following the incident, the Nigeria Police Force confirmed the dismissal of ASP Nuhu Usman and other officers linked to the case. The Inspector-General of Police described the act as “criminal and unprofessional,” stating that those involved would face prosecution.
He added that the April 26 killing was unacceptable and reiterated that such conduct has no place within the force. The Force Disciplinary Committee subsequently handled the case, with three inspectors subjected to an Orderly Room Tribunal.
