The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has kicked off its first round of nationwide congresses, marking a key phase in its internal processes as it prepares for its maiden national convention scheduled for May 9, 2026.

The development was announced on Friday by the party’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Abdulmumin Abdulsalam, who confirmed that activities have commenced across the country.



According to him, ward and polling unit congresses are slated for May 1 and 2, while local government congresses will follow on May 4.

The series of exercises is expected to culminate in the party’s first National Convention, which will hold in Abuja and is aimed at finalising leadership structures and major party decisions.

“On the back of the ongoing congresses, the NDC is also set for its maiden national party convention, which is scheduled to hold in Abuja on the 9th of May, 2026.

“Preparations for the convention have been concluded by the planning committee. All is now set for the big event, which shall host accredited party faithfuls as well as the relevant INEC officials who are expected to monitor and observe the conduct of the Convention as mandated by the Electoral Act.

“Security agencies have also been put on notice to ensure adequate security and safety for accredited party faithfuls, officials and other guests,” Abdulsalam stated.

The party leadership expressed confidence in its officials at both state and national levels to conduct the congresses in accordance with laid-down rules and the party’s constitution.

The congresses represent a significant step for the relatively new political platform as it moves to consolidate its structure and prepare for broader political participation ahead of future elections.
