President Bola Tinubu has directed all political appointees in his administration seeking to contest elective positions in the 2027 general elections to resign their appointments on or before March 31, 2026.
The directive was conveyed in a press release issued by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, OSGF, in line with Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, and the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, for party primaries.

According to the circular signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, and issued through the Permanent Secretary, General Services Office, Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, the resignation order applies to a wide range of presidential appointees intending to participate in party primaries or seek nomination for elective offices.

Those affected include ministers, ministers of state, special advisers, senior special assistants, special assistants, and personal assistants to the president. The directive also covers directors-general and chief executive officers of federal government parastatals, agencies, commissions, government-owned companies, as well as other political appointees.
The statement specified that all affected officials must submit their formal resignation letters through the OSGF on or before the March 31 deadline.

President Tinubu said the move is aimed at ensuring strict compliance with electoral laws, enhancing transparency in the political process, and creating a level playing field for all aspirants ahead of the 2027 polls.
He urged all concerned officials to adhere strictly to the directive, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and ensuring credible elections in Nigeria.

The announcement signals an early alignment of the federal government with electoral guidelines as political activities gradually gather momentum ahead of the next general elections.
