The Akwa Ibom Governor Pastor Umo Eno has released an additional ₦2.3 billion for the payment of outstanding gratuities to retirees in the state, bringing the total disbursement under his administration to nearly ₦80 billion.
The latest payment is part of the Governor’s sustained effort to clear the backlog of inherited entitlements.
A statement issued on Wednesday by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Ekerete Udoh, indicates that the Governor met a huge liability of ₦111 billion in unpaid gratuities and other emoluments when he assumed office on May 29, 2023.
“With the release of this amount, Governor Eno has so far paid about ₦80 billion in gratuities and other emoluments since assuming office,” part of the statement read.
The Governor’s spokesman reiterated that the payment of gratuities is a core component of the administration’s social investment policy, reflecting a commitment to compassionate governance.
He further highlighted other social intervention programs undertaken by the administration, including the construction of 335 ARISE Compassionate Homes, the provision of monthly stipends to elderly citizens across the 368 wards, and the enrollment of over 10,000 vulnerable persons into a free medical insurance scheme.
Udoh stated that despite the significant financial commitment to welfare, the government continues to execute major projects in sectors such as aviation, agriculture, infrastructure, and tourism, maintaining that the Governor remains focused on delivering on his campaign promises.
“Governor Eno is indeed walking the talk. The people are happy, and it can only get better,” he added.
