The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has passed a resolution directing the Commissioner of Police, Akwa Ibom State Command, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, to ensure strict enforcement of the Governor’s directive banning the covering of vehicle number plates in the state.

The resolution, passed during Tuesday’s plenary, followed a motion sponsored by the member representing Mkpat Enin State Constituency, Hon. Uwem Peter Imoh-Ita, who called for urgent action to curb the rising number of unregistered and unidentified vehicles, particularly those owned by construction companies operating within the state.

Citing Order III, Rules 1 and 2 of the House Standing Orders (7th Edition), Hon. Imoh-Ita expressed concern that many vehicles, especially heavy-duty trucks, ply state roads without registration or identification numbers.
He warned that such vehicles pose serious threats to public safety, as they are often involved in road accidents, property damage, or fatalities — and escape accountability due to lack of traceable registration.

In adopting the motion, the House urged the Commissioner for Works and Fire Service, Prof. Eno Ibanga, to direct all construction firms in the state to ensure that every vehicle in their fleet, including heavy-duty trucks, is duly registered and assigned a valid number plate.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) was also mandated to intensify surveillance and enforcement efforts to ensure full compliance with vehicle registration and identification laws across Akwa Ibom State.

Meanwhile, the House has adjourned plenary to reconvene on Tuesday, 18th November 2025 at 10 a.m.
