Ghanaian authorities said they have received some Nigerians and other West African citizens deported from the United States, US, after agreement with Donald Trump’s government.
In a news conference on Wednesday, September 10, President John Mahama said 14 U.S. deportees, including Nigerians and Gambians arrived Ghana following a bilateral agreement with the US.
Among the 14 people already deported to Ghana are “several” Nigerians and a Gambian, Mr Mahama said, adding “All our fellow West African nationals don’t need visas to come to our country.”
“We were approached by the US to accept third-party nationals who were being removed from the US. And we agreed with them that West African nationals were acceptable,” Mr Mahama said.
The Ghanaian president also said they would return deported Nigerians to their country by bus.
President Trump’s administration has recently clamped down on illegal migrants since his second return to the White House in January.
Ghana now joins Rwanda, Uganda and Eswatini, African countries that have agreed to accept US deportees since the US government made the offer to leaders of African countries.
