NASA and ISRO have announced that the NISAR (NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar) satellite will be launched on July 30. It is one of the most expensive Earth observation satellites, costing $1.5 billion. It is the first satellite in the world equipped with L- and S-band radars, capable of creating relief maps of land and ice masses with a resolution of 5-10 meters.
NISAR will scan almost all of the planet’s land and glaciers twice every 12 days, tracking changes in ecosystems, melting glaciers and ice, and tectonic movements. The data obtained will help in monitoring infrastructure, agriculture, and rapid response to natural disasters.
