The squad, which comprises 24 players, will be led by mercurial captain Rasheedat Ajibade, who will don the number 15 shirt, while fellow attackers Asisat Oshoala and Ifeoma Onumonu will wear numbers 8 and 9, respectively. First-choice shot-stopper Chiamaka Nnadozie stays faithful to number 16, though Tochukwu Oluehi keeps the number one jersey.

Al Ittihad defender Ashleigh Plumptre has a new shirt identity, as she will wear number 5 instead of the number 4 she wore at the previous WAFCON tournament in Morocco in 2022 and the number 2 she adorned at the FIFA Women’s World Cup co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand. Fellow defence stalwart Osinachi Ohale takes the number 2 while UD Tenerife star Rinsola Babajide has been handed the number 2 jersey.

Midfield heavyweight Christy Ucheibe takes the iconic number 10 shirt, Deborah Abiodun will don the number 13 jersey, Toni Payne retains her number 7 shirt, while fan favourite Michelle Alozie will stick to number 22. Veteran winger Francesca Ordega and PSG ace Jennifer Echegini will both wear numbers 17 and 12, respectively.

The tournament, which kicked off on Saturday, will see 12 countries battle over the next couple of weeks for the right to be called African champions. Only three nations, namely Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea and South Africa, have won the continent’s elite women’s competition since its inception in 1998.
