The United States, US, President Donald Trump has criticised Israeli prosecutors over Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s ongoing corruption trial, warning that Washington would not “stand for” what he described as judicial interference in critical regional negotiations.
In a post on Truth Social on Saturday, June 28, Trump lashed out at what he called “INSANITY” from “out-of-control prosecutors”, accusing them of compromising Netanyahu’s ability to lead vital talks with Hamas and Iran. The Israeli prime minister is due to take the witness stand on Monday for cross-examination, after a court rejected his legal team’s request to postpone his appearance due to pressing diplomatic and security matters following this month’s 12-day conflict between Israel and Iran.
Netanyahu, who was indicted in 2019 on charges of bribery, fraud and breach of trust—charges he denies—has been facing trial since 2020 in relation to three criminal cases. Trump has repeatedly defended Netanyahu, and Saturday’s remarks marked the second time in recent days that he has called for the cancellation of the trial.
“The United States of America spends Billions of Dollars a year, far more than on any other Nation, protecting and supporting Israel. We are not going to stand for this,” Trump wrote.
While Israeli prosecutors declined to comment on the post, Trump’s direct reference to US military and financial assistance raised eyebrows, suggesting a potential link between the continuation of the trial and Washington’s future support for Israel.
Trump also claimed Netanyahu was currently in the process of negotiating a deal with Hamas, though he did not provide further details. On Friday, the president told reporters he believed a ceasefire was close.
Hamas, which still holds Israeli hostages in Gaza, has signalled willingness to engage in negotiations to end the war, provided any agreement includes the release of Palestinian prisoners. Israel, however, has insisted that any ceasefire would only be possible if Hamas is disarmed and dismantled—terms the group firmly rejects.
The urgency of resolving the Gaza conflict has increased following US and Israeli airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities earlier this month, which briefly escalated into a broader regional confrontation.
Netanyahu’s appearance in court on Monday will take place against a tense backdrop of political pressure, both domestic and international, as efforts to stabilise the region and secure a lasting ceasefire continue.
