President of the United States, Donald Trump, has sparked both controversy and laughter after sharing what appears to be an AI-generated image of himself in papal attire on his Truth Social platform.

This post comes days after he, Trump expressed a desire to become the next head of the Catholic Church.

The photos were reposted on the X handle of the White House, and captured Trump in full papal attire (white robes, a golden crucifix, and a miter hat), with his right index finger pointed skyward.

Earlier, Trump was asked by reporters who he would support as the next pontiff, he said “I’d like to be pope, that would be my number one choice.”

His comment came just ahead of the conclave set to elect a successor to Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21.

However, the US president has not publicly endorsed any candidate, he mentioned a “very good” cardinal in New York, widely believed to be Archbishop Timothy Dolan, a theological conservative known for his opposition to abortion.

Trump also attended Pope Francis’ funeral last week in what marked his first international appearance since returning to office.
