Team Akwa Ibom is on the medals table at the 22nd National Sports Festival in Ogun State, thanks to weightlifter Theresa Daniel, who delivered the team’s first gold medal.
Competing in the women’s 55kg category, Theresa impressed with a 113kg clean and jerk lift, earning the top prize and giving Akwa Ibom a strong start to the games.
Her victory came with strong support from the stands, including the presence of the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Sports, Elder Paul Bassey, and the Permanent Secretary of the Sports Ministry, Mrs Rosemary Ubia.
Theresa’s win brings high hopes for more medals in the weightlifting events, where Team Akwa Ibom has shown strong promise in past editions.
Shortly after the gold medal win, Team Akwa Ibom also claimed a silver medal in the Kung Fu Changquan demonstration event. Mfoniso David secured second place after a close contest, though her final score sparked some debate, with officials ruling in favour of an athlete from Bayelsa State.
