Tension As Gas Explosion Rocks Gateway Games Venue

A gas explosion at the Alake Sports Complex in Ijeja, Abeokuta, on Monday, May 19, triggered panic among athletes and spectators during the ongoing 2024 National Sports Festival.

According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred when a gas truck supplying fuel to the venue’s generating set suddenly caught fire. The unexpected blaze caused a commotion, with people scrambling for safety as thick smoke billowed from the site.

Fortunately, emergency responders arrived promptly and were able to contain the fire before it spread. Thanks to their swift intervention, no casualties were reported, and the situation was brought under control in record time, according to ThePUNCH reports.

Despite the scare, activities at the venue have since resumed. Events including handball, squash, and badminton were back on schedule by the time this report was filed.
