The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has formally invited former Niger Delta militant leader, Chief Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, over alleged naira abuse and financial misconduct.
Sources within the anti-graft agency confirmed that the invitation letter was delivered earlier this week, following the circulation of a viral video showing Tompolo being lavishly sprayed with bundles of ₦1,000 notes during what appeared to be his 54th birthday celebration in April.
The EFCC clarified that the invitation was part of a standard investigative process and not an arrest warrant.
“An invitation letter has been sent to Tompolo. It is expected that he will cooperate with the Commission,” an EFCC source told Sahara Reporters.
The move comes amid growing public pressure and accusations of selective justice after several high-profile figures—including crossdresser Bobrisky, music promoter E-Money, actress Iyabo Ojo, and comedian AY—were recently interrogated or prosecuted for similar acts of naira mutilation.
Social media users widely criticized the EFCC for allegedly turning a blind eye to Tompolo, prompting widespread calls for equal application of the law.
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has repeatedly emphasized that spraying and defacing the naira constitutes an offense punishable under Nigerian law. The EFCC, in recent months, has intensified its crackdown on such violations, vowing to uphold financial discipline irrespective of status or background.
As of press time, Tompolo has not issued any public statement regarding the EFCC’s invitation.
The Commission’s latest action is expected to test its commitment to impartiality and strengthen public confidence in its drive against financial recklessness and currency abuse.
