The Inspector – General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun yesterday said he will ensure a credible and transparent reward system which will recognise and honour hardworking, honest, gallant and patriotic personnel of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).

Egbetokun said this while speaking on the forthcoming second edition of the Nigeria Police Awards and commendations scheduled to hold on Wednesday June 4, 2025 at the Police Resource Center, Jabi, Abuja.

The IGP who spoke through the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi said since its establishment, the Nigeria Police Force, through its dedication and patriotic commitment to a united Nigeria, has remained the nation’s leading security agency in internal security.

He said the Force had remained steadfast and committed to combating all forms of criminality in the country.

His words: “On behalf of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun I heartily welcome you to this press conference. The Inspector-General of Police at different fora, has emphasized the commitment of the Force to improving the welfare of officers and men while stressing the importance of providing comfortable living and working conditions and the emplacement of a credible and transparent reward system which will recognize and honour hardworking, honest, gallant and patriotic personnel of the Nigeria Police.

“As part of his vision to motivate and encourage police officers, the Inspector-General of Police has approved the organization of the second edition of the Nigeria Police Awards and Commendations Ceremony in conjunction with Lenders Consult International, a critical stakeholder in the Nigerian security space.

“The hosting of the Nigeria Police Awards and Commendations Ceremony is a part of a more comprehensive response package aimed at improving personnel overall welfare and motivation. This includes steady and significant improvement in housing and working conditions across all Police commands and formations. It also includes the emplacement of a credible and transparent reward system which will identify, recognize and honour acts of honesty, gallantry, dedication and patriotism displayed by our officers.

“This platform will provide an opportunity for officers to be recognized and rewarded for their exceptional dedication and performance without relying solely on special promotions. The IGP envisions a renewed sense of pride and dedication among police officers as they know their hard work and dedication will be acknowledged and celebrated appropriately. The Inspector-General of Police believes that this initiative would promote comradeship, unity, and teamwork within the Force. It will also assist in developing a sense of collaboration and shared responsibility in achieving the Force’s objectives.

“The Second Award Ceremony is scheduled to be held on Wednesday 4th June 2025 at the Police Resource Centre, Jabi, Abuja. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, the Special Guest of Honour will be joined by very important dignitaries, experts in the security circle and senior security managers of the Force and other security and intelligence agencies. Awards will be presented in the following categories: Crime Buster of the Year, Community Policing Advocate of the Year, Detective of the Year and Police Sports Person of the Year. Other award categories include Divisional Police Officer of the Year, Area Commander of the Year, Patrol Team of the Year and Traffic Warden of the Year. Awards will also be presented for Gallantry and Integrity while officers who have distinguished themselves in Public Relations, Legal Practice, Medical practice and other areas of policing will be recognized and honoured through the IGP Special Recognition Awards. The highlight of the ceremony will be the crowning of the Police Officer of the Year.

“The award process for the Nigeria Police Awards and Commendation is unique. Nominations were invited from all police formations including Force Headquarters, Zonal Headquarters, State Commands, Area Commands, Divisional Headquarters and all police sections and departments. Thereafter, a collation committee comprising senior officers of the Force and a representative of Lenders Consult International who has over 10 years of experience in organizing transparent and credible awards in the country met severally to collate the names of eligible nominees. The final decisions on award winners were taken by the Force Management Team led by the Inspector-General of Police at a meeting which lasted several hours. This meticulous process assisted in insulating the award decisions from undue interferences and biases which often characterize competitive awards such as this.

“Inspector-General of Police therefore reassures of the firm commitment of the Force to continually making policies that will improve their standard of living and working conditions. The IGP equally charges the personnel of the Force to remain focused, disciplined, professional and committed to upholding the core values and ethics of the Nigeria Police Force. He further charges them to be aware that their selfless services will not go unnoticed and celebrated.”
