The Nigeria Lawmakers Opposition Coalition has revealed that 40 federal lawmakers and two state governors are on the verge of defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing a deepening crisis and loss of confidence in the party’s leadership.
Speaking at a press briefing in Akokwa, the coalition’s spokesperson and member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, said the PDP is rapidly losing its grip due to internal sabotage and directionless leadership.
“The founding fathers of the PDP would be ashamed of what the party has become,” Ugochinyere lamented. “For two years, the leadership has failed to resolve its internal crisis because they are the very ones undermining the platform that brought them to power.”
He demanded the immediate sack of the Acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, and the expulsion of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, and Senator Samuel Anyanwu, PDP’s 2023 governorship candidate in Imo State.
The coalition further called for the emergence of a substantive national chairman from the North Central zone to restore the party’s balance and credibility.
Taking a swipe at Damagum’s reliance on “divine guidance” in managing party affairs, Ugochinyere asked: “Where was God when the North Central was sidelined? When defectors from the APC were supported in court or handed party structures? And yet you speak of faith in God?”
He also questioned Wike’s continued membership in the PDP despite what he described as “open romance” with the APC-led federal government.
