A non-governmental organization, Shepriesthood International has urged rural communities in Akwa Ibom State to always prepare for any emergency arising from climate change.

Speaking during a one-day seminar held at Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area on the theme ‘Climate Change, Early Warning System and Disaster Preparedness,’ the resource person, Mr Anyanya Abasi James disclosed that early preparation against climate will enable rural dwellers to take necessary steps to adapt to it, according to ThePUNCH reports.

He defined climate change as the atmospheric condition of a place over some time, adding that climate change lives with the people.

He said, “Just observe the global warming. It is everywhere. The ozone layer has been depleted. The consequences are there.”

The seminar which was organized by the founder of Global Greengrants Fund in partnership with Oilwatch Africa in collaboration with ShePriesthood International Ministry Incorporation as the host enumerated the causes of climate change to include bush burning, activities of oil exploration, and industrialization, among others.

James explained that the seminar was aimed at equipping rural dwellers with the preparation needed to adapt and cope with climate change.

He added, “This seminar is meant to equip participants with knowledge and skills on climate change, early warning systems and preparedness.

“It is part of a broader initiative to promote climate change resilience and disaster preparedness in Akwa Ibom State and is expected to have a positive impact on the lives of residents of the state.

“It will therefore empower residents of the local communities with cash grants to support their farming initiatives as part of preparations for climate change.

“Don’t indulge in bush burning. It contributes to global warming and climate change.”
