The Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria, ISPON,  has lauded the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Umo Eno, for being the first governor in the South-South region to institute safety protocols as state policy.

This was contained in a statement issued to newsmen by its coordinator in the state, Ita Benson, in Uyo on Monday

Benson said, “Governor Umo Eno has demonstrated great commitment to protecting lives and property in the state. Last year, he approved the recruitment of safety officers.

“With the establishment of the Department of Occupational Safety, we are sure that certain safety gaps would be addressed.”

Highlighting the need for safety protocols in state policy, Benson described the directive given to the Secretary to the State Government, Enobong Uwah to take over the supervision of the state Infrastructure and Asset Management and Maintenance Agency as a welcome development.

The statement added, “In a determined bid to ensure proper control and better outcomes, the state governor also directed the office of the Secretary to State Government to take over the supervision of the Akwa Ibom State Infrastructure and Asset Management and Maintenance Agency.”

The ISPON helmsman welcomed the development, describing it as a smart move by the state government.

Benson added, “Whenever a government invests in safety, it is a way of saying ‘what we have is important and we are prepared to preserve it for future generations.’

“This is historic! Governor Eno has put safety in the front row of government policy. This is a victory for us as safety professionals because safety is the key to a better society.”
