Human rights lawyer, Mr Femi Falana (SAN), has asked the Federal Government to fish out the culprits involved in the sporadic attacks and barbaric killing of innocent people in Benue and Plateau states and other states of the federation.
He said the Federal Government owes the Nigerian people a duty to fish out the culprits involved in the sporadic attacks and barbaric killing of innocent people.
Falana who is the Chairman of the group, Alliance on Surviving COVID-19 and Beyond (ASCAB) in his reaction yesterday said that the government should act likewise in Edo State to investigate and arrest the suspect of the killings.
He said the security forces speedily arrested the 14 suspects who were alleged to have brutally murdered 16 citizens at Uromi in Edo State.
Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, travelled to Kano, where he held a meeting with the Kano State Governor, Mr. Abba Kabir Yusuf.
Falana said that the visiting governor also met with the bereaved family members of the deceased and promised that the Edo State Government would pay monetary compensation to them.
According to him, “No doubt, the swift arrest of the suspects and other actions taken by the Edo State Government, the Federal Government, and the security forces doused tension and prevented reprisal attacks over the unfortunate incident.
“While the nation was yet to recover from the shock, the sanguine killings of scores of other unarmed citizens in Benue and Plateau states by armed herders and other gunmen have continued unabated.”
He also urged the Edo government to allow the law to take its cause, and arraign the suspect arrested.
“We are compelled to call on the Attorneys-General of Edo, Benue, and Plateau to arraign the suspects who have been arrested by the security forces without any delay,” he said.
“We have confirmed the ubiquitous presence of the personnel of the Armed Forces in all state capitals and the operatives of the State Security Service, Nigeria Police Force, and Nigeria Immigration Service in the headquarters of the 774 local governments in the country.
“We are compelled to call on the federal government to coordinate, equip, and motivate the security forces to end the routine abduction and reckless killings of unarmed citizens without any further delay.
He urged the state governments to encourage the Nigerian people to collaborate with security agencies, to give useful information to the relevant security agencies.
“To achieve adequate security the Nigerian state would need the full cooperation of the people in good faith.”
