The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved N10.3 billion for the procurement of essential health commodities, including antiretroviral drugs for HIV treatment, diabetes diagnostic kits, and medical equipment, FirstNEWS reports.
The decision, made during Wednesday’s FEC meeting, is part of the government’s effort to improve access to affordable healthcare for Nigerians.
Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Ali Pate, who briefed journalists after the meeting, disclosed that N997 million was earmarked for third-line antiretroviral drugs to support HIV patients.
“This move is critical to sustaining HIV treatment amidst changes in global health financing. The shift towards domestic financing will ensure Nigerians continue receiving the care they need,” Pate said.
In addition to HIV treatment, the council approved the procurement of locally manufactured diabetes diagnostic kits.
The kits, produced by a Lagos-based company, will be distributed to primary healthcare centres, with health workers trained to help patients monitor their blood sugar levels.
“Diabetes is a growing concern in Nigeria, affecting many people unaware of their condition. This initiative will improve early diagnosis and management,” Pate added.
Further approvals include N4.5 billion for antibiotics, antihypertensive, and antidiabetic medications to ease the financial burden on patients.
Also, N2.1 billion was allocated for the procurement of a mobile X-ray machine and the upgrade of a 64-slice CT scan at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, Bauchi, to strengthen diagnostic services in the region.
The Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to boosting local manufacturing of medical supplies, aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s directive to lower the cost of essential health commodities.
