A literacy hub in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, has called for the inclusion of Financial Literacy in the school curriculum as a foundation for resource management.
An Educationist and teacher, Mfon Ebebe of the Uyo Book Club made the call on Tuesday while reviewing a book during the January 2025 reading session.
Ebebe said society is evolving and some of the things taught in the classroom may not be sufficient to help students pull through future economic uncertainties hence the need to build a strong foundation through financial literacy.
She urged curriculum planners and developers to come up with practical ideas that are very relevant which would help students become independent and financially wise upon graduation even while in school.
Her words, “it is high time we included financial literacy in our school curriculum. Some of the things we teach in school may not be totally relevant but with financial literacy, we can come up with ideas that are relevant and useful to our children. As they move from primary through secondary to tertiary levels, they will be grounded in financial literacy and stability.
“This will also help these children, after graduation, they will no longer be thinking about how to get a job because jobs are no longer there. While in school, they can still help their parents build their financial level. If a child starts from secondary school to have awareness of how money is used, how money is made, how it can be sustained, it will help the child better.”
Ebebe said the inclusion of financial literacy in the primary and secondary school curricula would complement the existing entrepreneurial studies at the tertiary level and make the students well-grounded on financial issues.
“If a child starts from secondary school to have awareness on how money is used, how money is made how it can be sustained, it will help him better,” she added.
In his remarks, the Special Guest, renowned banker, Dr Magnus Chukwuekezie, who admitted that women’s subjugation is real, called for their financial empowerment and advised women to be wise in the use of their resources.
He also advised students to think out of the box and build their social capital through opportunities prevalent in social media.
Earlier, the Founder of the Uyo Book Club, Dr Udeme Nana, who welcomed members to the first reading session of the year, announced that the Book Club would focus on books written by indigenous Authors in 2025.
