In a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier on Monday, November 18, 2024, the Super Eagles of Nigeria suffered a 1-2 to the Amavubi of Rwanda.
The Super Eagles coached by Augustine Eguavoen, had already guaranteed a spot at the AFCON in Morocco the following year.
However, after losing to the Mediterranean Knights of Libya 0-1 at home on matchday 5, Rwanda was in severe need of a win to boost their chances.
At the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Nigeria took the lead in the 59th minute of the second half when substitute Samuel Chukwueze converted a ball from Frank Onyeka.
Jojea Kwizera’s goal for Ange Mutsinzi in the 72nd minute gave Rwanda the equalizer.
Innocent Nshuti was positioned to fire past Maduka Okoye as Rwanda took the lead two minutes later.
The Super Eagles were unable to equalize, and Rwanda managed to hold on and win all three points.
After the game, Goalkeeper Maduka Okoye received massive criticism from Nigerian football fans.
Eguavoen named Okoye as the starter in goal because Stanley Nwabali was missing due to a personal issue.
Okoye has been away from the national team for a while until a few selections during the break for the AFCON qualifiers.
During that time he has rebuilt his reputation as a decent shot-stopper with Udinese in the Italian Serie A.
However, his performance against Rwanda in Uyo was not well received by Nigerian football fans and they took to social media to give their thoughts.
