The Chairman of Akwa Ibom State Environmental Protection and Waste Management Agency (AKSEPWMA), Obong Prince Ikim, said the development has become imperative as the agency grapples with indiscriminate refuse dumping and other environmental infractions among residents, reports the Vanguard newspaper.
He said the violations, especially within the capital city, Uyo metropolis constitute obstacles to Governor Umo Eno’s ARISE Agenda for sustainable environmental management, informing the need turn to the ICW for effective intervention.
He explained that the initiative has witnessed “Enlightenment and sensitization campaigns and represents a coordinated effort between AKSEPWMA and Ibom Community Watch under the Ministry of Internal Security and Waterways alongside other security agencies.
“Upon deployment of the 100 officers (ICW) to the agency, they were thoroughly retrained on basic intelligence requirements and enforcement of environmental laws, ensuring they are fit in character and equipped to do the job without misconducts.
“Effective November 1, 2024, residents will see officers strategically stationed along major routes and locations within the Uyo metropolis to ensure compliance with environmental regulations.
“In line with the Governor’s ARISE Agenda of environmental sustainability, we all know that environmental issues in Akwa Ibom State have moved from being politicized to securitized.”
“We enjoin residents and all stakeholders to cooperate with the officers in their duties as this new development aims to protect the health and well-being of millions of inhabitants in Akwa Ibom.”
