Akwa Ibom commissioner of Police, Waheed Ayilara, is dead

Waheed Ayilara, the Commissioner of Police for Akwa Ibom State, has passed away.

Reports indicate that Ayilara died early Thursday morning at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, following prostate cancer surgery performed the previous day.

Family sources confirmed the tragic news, expressing deep sorrow at the loss of their loved one.

A senior police officer in Akwa Ibom, who requested anonymity, also verified Ayilara’s death.

Ayilara was appointed as the acting Commissioner of Police in Lagos in November 2023, while serving as a Deputy Commissioner of Police.

He succeeded AIG Idowu Owohunwa. In February 2024, Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun appointed Ayilara to lead the Akwa Ibom State Command. His passing marks a significant loss for the police community and the state he served.
