On Tuesday, August 13, 2024, the Council of State, comprising former Presidents, the President of the Senate, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, serving and retired Chief Justices of Nigeria, and State Governors, passed a vote of confidence in President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
This decision came during a National Council of State meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, which was presided over by President Tinubu.
The confidence vote was supported by notable figures including Generals Yakubu Gowon, Muhammadu Buhari, Abdulsalami Abubakar, and former President Goodluck Jonathan. Buhari and Jonathan attended the meeting in person, while Gowon and Abubakar joined virtually. However, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo and General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida were absent, with no reason provided for their non-attendance.
Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq of Kwara State, who is also the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, stated that the council unanimously endorsed Tinubu’s administration for its governance. The council was reportedly pleased with the economic progress presentations made by various ministers.
Minister of Solid Mineral Development, Dr. Dele Alake, highlighted that the council condemned recent protests, describing them as insurrectional and aimed at regime change. The Council of State emphasized that any change in leadership should be achieved through democratic means rather than through unrest.
National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu provided an update on the security situation in the country, particularly regarding the protests. Seven ministers presented reports on economic diversification and progress, with Finance Minister Wale Edun specifically updating the council on economic advancements.
The council’s resolution reflects a unified stance in support of President Tinubu’s administration and a rejection of attempts to disrupt Nigeria’s democratic processes.
