Niger has implemented strict airspace restrictions on flights originating from or heading to Nigeria, both domestically and internationally, effective immediately.
According to an official statement, the Niger Republic’s airspace remains open to all international and domestic commercial flights except those involving Nigeria.
This decision, aimed at controlling air traffic, particularly from Nigeria, does not impact flights merely transiting through Nigerian airspace without landing.
However, it mandates continuous operation of ADS-B and/or Radar transponders for flights within Niger’s airspace.
Moreover, military, operational, and special flights are strictly prohibited without prior authorization from competent authorities.
Prominent investigative journalist, David Hundeyin, expressed his response, recalling his efforts to prevent a potential conflict between the two nations. He stated, “I quite literally set myself on fire last year to stop Nigeria from going to war with Niger, so my conscience is very clear in all of this. Congratulations to everyone who accused me of ‘treason’ and tried to end my life back then.”
The implementation of these airspace restrictions underscores the ongoing complexities in regional relations and air traffic management.
