Dancehall King Timaya alongside his superstar colleagues recently shutdown Bayelsa as they ushered the people of the state into the new year with music and dance.
The event was the celebration of the first ‘Timaya Day’ since 2020 before the COVID era. The epoch-making event held on January 1, apparently set the oil-rich state on fire.
The day officially dedicated to celebrate Bayelsa’s first and finest son, was nothing short of a homecoming show for the Egeberi Papa 1 of Bayelsa.
The ‘Dem Mama’ singer surely did put on a memorable show for his people, who he has represented very well from day one. And his people embraced him like never before as not less than 25,000 fans thronged the Oxbow Pavillon Lake, Yenagoa, the State capital, venue of the show to celebrate their illustrious son.
Lining up some of the finest entertainers in Africa, who are now either his close friends or mentees of some sort, Timaya ensured Bayelsans had the most talked about new year celebrations in the country. With the likes of D’banj, Phyno, Tekno, King Perry, Portable and Ajebo Hustlers, all gracing the stage while Sabinus hosted the show in his trademark comic style.
The superstars delivered electrifying performances which Bayelsans would not forget in a hurry for a long time. From D’banj who was in his best element, performing some of his evergreen hit songs, to e Phyno, Portable and Tekno, who disappeared from the scene, Bayelsans had a happy start of 2024 with music.
Governor Douye Diri among other notable state’s House of Assembly members graced the event to celebrate a son of the soil who has become an ambassador in his own right as he has continued to put Bayelsa on the continental and global maps.
Timaya Day is also an event used to provide young artistes/creatives from the state with the opportunity to showcase their talents and have a platform on which to build from.
As someone who first gained visibility from a talent hunt, Timaya has always been passionate about supporting the next generation of talents with a platform to showcase their skills to the world while also helping to develop the entertainment sector in the Niger Delta region.
Commenting on the show in an Instagram post, Timaya wrote “ Father God, I hope and pray that you bless so many others the same way you have blessed me with my Bayelsa peoples.”
Born Inetimi Alfred Timaya Odon, Timaya hails from Odi, Bayelsa state. He began his solo career in 2005 with the release of the single “Dem Mama.” His debut album, True Story, was released the following year, followed by his second album ‘Gift and Grace’, in 2008. His third studio album De Rebirth was released in partnership with Black Body Entertainment and had the lead single “Plantain Boy.” He’s best known for combining Nigerian pop with elements of dancehall, hip-hop, and soca, as well as his blend of Afro-Caribbean/Dancehall music. He’s the founder of DM (Dem Mama) Records Limited.
