Abba Abubakar, son of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, has declared his intention to mobilise voters in Adamawa State to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027, despite his father’s political ambition.
Abba made the declaration on Friday, October 30, 2026, at the national secretariat of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Abuja during the unveiling of the Haske Bola Tinubu Organisation, HBTO, alongside the launch of its subsidised public transportation support scheme.
The organisation, founded by Abubakar, is aimed at mobilising support for Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Addressing the political implications of his decision, Abubakar said his support for the president should not be interpreted as an attempt to undermine his father, who is the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, ADC.
“I recognise that political decisions, particularly those that differ from the positions of individuals with whom one shares personal and family relationships, often attract considerable public attention,” he said.
“However, political conviction is a matter of personal judgment, conscience, and the freedom of every individual to make independent choices.
“My decision to establish and lead the HBTO is a deliberate political choice made with a firm belief in the direction we have chosen.”
He argued that the ability of individuals to make independent political decisions was essential to strengthening democracy, adding that citizens should be free to support political platforms and leaders that align with their aspirations.
“It is within this spirit that HBTO was established,” he said.
Abubakar also expressed support for the economic policies of the Tinubu administration, highlighting the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, NELFUND, infrastructure development, increased statutory allocations to state governments and transport intervention programmes as measures he believed would benefit Nigerians.
When asked if he was confident of securing substantial votes for Tinubu in Adamawa, his father’s home state, Abubakar responded affirmatively.
“Yes, yes, yes. We are going to deliver Adamawa state.”
He further dismissed suggestions that his political alignment with the APC amounted to disloyalty to his father or a rejection of his political aspirations.
“I’ve always supported my father since I started acting in politics, and I supported him because of what he has done for the country,” he said.
“But I believe that whenever a government comes out with policies that will help the people, I will join them.
“It’s not just because it’s my father. I don’t think I am antagonising him; I simply believe in the current government’s policies and the reforms taking place.”
Abubakar joined the APC in January 2026 and subsequently pledged to work towards securing Tinubu’s re-election in 2027.
