The Akwa Ibom State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, has launched a special enforcement exercise known as Operation Shark Smile to reduce road crashes and improve safety on roads across the state.

The Sector Commander, Mrs. Felicia Kalu, announced the operation in a statement issued in Uyo on Monday, July 20, 2026.

She explained that the exercise is a strategic initiative by FRSC Zone 6 to address the increasing number of road traffic crashes and enforce traffic laws more effectively.

According to Kalu, the operation reflects the Corps’ commitment to restoring order on the roads and reducing traffic violations through stronger enforcement and public awareness.

She said the special operation will focus on common traffic offences committed by motorists and riders across the state. The exercise will be carried out at the same time in all FRSC Unit Commands.

The Sector Commander added that the operation will be conducted in collaboration with other security agencies. Motorists found violating traffic laws will be prosecuted or required to pay the prescribed fines in line with existing regulations.

She listed the major offences targeted during the operation to include overloading, mix-loading of passengers and goods, number plate violations, dangerous and reckless driving or riding, use of worn-out tyres, speeding, use of mobile phones while driving, and failure to wear seat belts.

The Sector Commander explained that the special patrol became necessary because of the need to protect lives, reduce road crashes, and discourage reckless behaviour among road users.

She assured residents that there would be increased patrols, wider route coverage, and a stronger FRSC presence on major highways throughout the operation.

Kalu also appealed to motorists and other road users to obey traffic rules, drive responsibly, and avoid any form of recklessness that could endanger their lives or the lives of others.
