This was made known by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, PPRO, DSP Timfon John in a Press Release issued in Uyo on Monday, April 27, 2026.

“Officers recovered high explosive devices near the Ikot Ekpene custodial centre, prompting an emergency response.

“Acting on intelligence from correctional authorities, the Commissioner of Police, Baba Mohammed Azare, deployed a specialist bomb disposal unit alongside tactical teams to secure the area.

“A search operation uncovered two 90-millimetre high explosive rounds, a burning fuse, and a number of tools believed to be linked to the devices.”

Police say the explosives were safely defused at the scene, preventing what they describe as a potentially deadly incident.

Security has now been stepped up around the facility, with increased patrols and surveillance.

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine how the explosives got there and who may be responsible.

The police say no casualties were recorded and have urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity.

Though Police insist the situation is under control, but the discovery is likely to raise fresh concerns about the security of correctional facilities in the country.
