President Bola Tinubu has announced plans to deepen investment in police training, intelligence gathering, and modern law enforcement systems as part of efforts to transform the Nigeria Police Force into a world-class institution.
Speaking at the National Police Day Grand Parade in Abuja, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Tinubu said Nigeria must strengthen its security agencies to ensure national progress.
He emphasised that security remains the foundation of development, noting that “every nation is only as safe as those who keep vigil while others sleep.”
The President assured that his administration would sustain investments in capacity building, modern equipment, improved intelligence systems, and better welfare for police personnel.
“We are determined to build a Police Force that is well equipped, well trained, and well-motivated to confront the complex security challenges of our time,” he said.
Tinubu also paid tribute to officers who lost their lives in the line of duty, describing their sacrifices as part of the nation’s enduring moral legacy, while commending serving personnel for their resilience.
He urged officers to uphold professionalism, fairness, and respect for the rule of law, stressing that effective policing must be rooted in trust and collaboration with citizens.
“The uniform you wear is not a licence for arbitrariness; it is a covenant of service,” he stated.
Earlier, Inspector General of Police Olatunji Disu reaffirmed the force’s commitment to discipline and professionalism, pledging to support officers who uphold the rules while addressing misconduct within the ranks.
He noted that the police leadership is focused on building an intelligence-led and accountable institution capable of meeting public expectations.
The event featured parades, tactical displays, and participation from senior government officials, security chiefs, and members of the diplomatic corps.
