The Akwa Ibom Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has announced plans to introduce additional infrastructure and public amenities at the newly refurbished Ibom Plaza in Uyo, reinforcing the state government’s drive to reposition the facility as a major tourism and leisure hub.

The Governor made this known during the official reopening of the plaza, where he praised the Uyo Capital City Development Authority for completing the renovation within the approved timeline. He described the project as a foundation for a broader vision that will further enhance the appeal and functionality of the city centre.

According to him, the plaza is intended to serve as a modern civic space where residents can gather for recreation, entertainment, and social interaction. He explained that ongoing planning efforts would shape the next phase of development, which is expected to include major structural additions and complementary facilities around the area.

Governor Eno also expressed appreciation to the leadership and workforce of the development authority for their commitment, noting that the current upgrade marks only the beginning of a wider transformation agenda for the site.

On security arrangements, the Governor acknowledged the support of the Nigeria Police Force, particularly the approval for a permanent security outpost within the plaza. He said the measure was aimed at safeguarding lives and property, while maintaining order in the public space.

He outlined operational guidelines for the facility, stating that the plaza would open daily in the morning and close at midnight. He warned that movement within the premises after closing hours would not be tolerated, adding that access control measures had been put in place to preserve the peaceful atmosphere envisioned for the area.

The Governor further disclosed that professional maintenance would be adopted for the plaza’s amenities, including restrooms, with the Uyo Capital City Development Authority retaining responsibility for continuous upkeep. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to tourism development and thanked residents for their support and turnout at the event.

In his remarks, the Chairman of Uyo Local Government Council, Dr Uwemedimo Udo, described the renovation as a timely intervention that has restored Ibom Plaza to prominence. He linked the project to earlier urban renewal ideals in the state and commended Governor Eno for sustaining that vision through creative redevelopment.

Dr Udo said the upgraded plaza represents a key tourism asset and an important symbol of architectural renewal in the state capital.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr Anieti Udofia, said the reopening marked a significant milestone, noting that the current administration has adopted deliberate renewal strategies to improve public infrastructure. He added that the project has strengthened cultural expression and enhanced Akwa Ibom’s profile as an emerging tourism destination.

Providing an overview of the project, the Chairman of the Uyo Capital City Development Authority, Rt Hon Anietie Eka, traced the decline of the plaza over the years, which he said eventually led to security concerns and loss of public confidence. He thanked the Governor for fulfilling a campaign pledge by restoring the facility in line with a broader plan to position the state as a tourism hub.

He listed new features introduced at the plaza to include art galleries showcasing historical narratives, improved security infrastructure supported by patrol vehicles, a large LED screen for public entertainment, and solar powered lighting across the premises. He expressed gratitude to the Governor for the opportunity to oversee the project and contribute to the realisation of the administration’s vision for Ibom Plaza.
