…Constitutes Joint Committee to legislate on non-payment of workers’ salaries
The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has received petition from the Akwa Ibom State Electricity Consumers Forum over alleged over estimated Billings in the state by the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHEDC).
The House also received petition from the Agency for Community and Social Development over none payment of salaries to its members for about 30 months.
The Chairman, House Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Public Petitions, Hon. Aniefiok Attah, submitted the two petitions on the floor of House for consideration during Tuesday’s plenary at the Assembly Complex, Udo Udoma Avenue, Uyo.

Hon. Attah noted that the leadership of the Electricity Consumers Forum, solicited the cooperation of the Assembly for immediate stoppage of alleged illigal estimated over billing of customers in the state against the directive of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission ( NERC).
The forum, the Nsit Atai lawmaker, said requested for the sales of prepaid metres to electricity consumers at reduced prices for installation to encourage fair billing system in the state and requested for an urgent intervention of the leadership and members of the Assembly on the matter in the interest of the general public.

Hon. Attah, while presenting petition from the Akwa Ibom State Agency for Community and Social Development before the Assembly for deliberations, noted that the Agency which was established in January 2009 has to do with none payment of salaries to workers by the state government for about 30 months.
The Lawmaker, noted that none payment of salaries to workers by government has exposed the affected staff and their dependants into untold hardship.

According to the petition that was endorsed by 30 members, Attah noted has snowballed into a situation where some of the Agency’s workers have been ejected from their residential quarters by their landlords and enlisted the cooperation of the Assembly to this effect.
The Member for Nsit Ibom State Constituency, Hon Eric Akpan moved motion for the receipt of the of two petitions for consideration and seconded by his Ikot Ekpene /Obot Akara State Constituency counterpart, Hon. Jerry Otu during Tuesday’s plenary.
The Speaker, Rt. Hon. ( Elder ) Udeme Otong, has raised a- joint Committee , headed by the Chairman, House Committee on Rural Development and Public Utilities to work with the Chairman, Human Rights and Public Petitions as member and submit reports in no distance future.
Meanwhile, the House has adjourned plenary to reconvene on Tuesday, 4th November 2025.
