Operatives of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command will begin the enforcement of the ban on all forms of covered number plates in the State from Friday, October 10, 2025.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, PPRO, DSP Timfon John made this known in a Press Release dated October 9, 2025 in Uyo.

The release stated as follows: “The Akwa Ibom State Police Command hereby notifies motorists and the general public that full-scale enforcement of the ban on all forms of covered number plates will take effect from Friday, October 10, 2025.

“This ban is absolute and applies to all classes of vehicles, including: Private and Commercial Vehicles, Government-Owned Vehicles (State and Federal), Vehicles belonging to Security Agencies, Vehicles of Very Important Personalities (VIPs)
“The Command notes with concern that some persons hide inside vehicles with covered number plates to act and commit offences that are against the law.

“Hence, the ban is critical to the security of the state as it will enhance public safety, promote law and order and strengthen the command’s crime fighting initiatives. The ban explicitly prohibits the use of any material, including dark covers, plastic films, or fabrics that makes the number plate illegible, the use of faded, dirty, or damaged plates that are not clearly visible, the alteration of any character on the plate, the use of unauthorized, non-government issued number plates.
“The Akwa Ibom State Police Command, under the strategic leadership of CP Baba Mohammed Azare Mnipr, fsi, will enforce this order without fear or favour. From the commencement date, any vehicle found in violation of the ban will be immediately impounded and drivers will face penalties as prescribed by the relevant traffic laws and regulations.
“Motorists are granted a grace period of today October 9, 2025 to remove all forms of number plate covers and ensure their number plates are clean, legible, and fully compliant with government standards.
“We urge all vehicle owners, drivers, and particularly the aides of public office holders to ensure strict adherence to this directive. The cooperation of the public is vital in ensuring the success of this security measure, which is ultimately for the safety and benefit of all residents of Akwa Ibom State.
“The Command remains resolute in its commitment to ensuring a safe and secure environment for all,” the PPRO concluded.
