The Akwa Ibom Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has described Akwa Ibom State as Nigeria’s “best kept secret” and “destination of choice,” citing major strides in infrastructure, tourism, agriculture, health, education, and social development over the past 38 years.
In a statewide broadcast to mark the 38th anniversary of the state’s creation, Governor Eno expressed gratitude to God and the people for the journey of growth, peace, and unity, noting that the Akwa Ibom of today is far removed from the “rural backwater” that existed at its creation in 1987.
“Today, thirty-eight years later, our State has become the destination of choice, the nation’s best kept secret.
“In place of dusty narrow streets, we now have one of the best road networks in the nation, thriving estates, and a world-class airline, Ibom Air, flying our flag of excellence,” the Governor declared.
He highlighted the transformation of Uyo into a modern capital city, the rise of Akwa Ibom indigenes to top positions globally, and the state’s recognition as a FIFA and CAF host venue for international football matches.

The Governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to diversifying the economy from oil to tourism and agriculture through the Arise Agenda.
He disclosed plans for a tree crop development programme to restore Akwa Ibom’s position as Nigeria’s leading oil palm producer and emphasized ongoing rural road expansion, with 771km of roads completed or under construction across the three senatorial districts.
Key projects nearing completion include the 15.13km Ikot Otomo–Azumini Road, to be commissioned by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, the Arise Resort set for commissioning in December, a 5,000-capacity International Convention Centre, a 200-room Ibom Hotel, and the Arise City Centre.
On social interventions, Governor Eno announced the construction of 267 furnished, solar-powered homes for vulnerable citizens out of a planned 500, and the distribution of food to over 500,000 households through the state’s verified social register.
Healthcare and education remain priorities, with plans to build model schools and healthcare centres across the state, the flag-off of a 350-bed Ibom International Hospital, and the commissioning of the Arise Elders Care Centre.

Governor Eno praised the contributions of past leaders, urging respect for their legacies, and called for unity as politics heats up ahead of 2027. He cautioned against inflammatory rhetoric and warned youths against being used to foment violence.
He also expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his support and reaffirmed Akwa Ibom’s loyalty to the administration, pledging support for Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.
