The Akwa Ibom State Government has dispatched the first batch of youths for specialised training in maritime infrastructure management, as part of efforts to prepare for the commencement of full-scale operations in the sector.

The signing of the bond of agreement between the state government and the trainees took place on Monday at the Ministry of Transport in Uyo, the state capital.

The Commissioner for Transport, Dr Anthony Luke, who presided over the ceremony, said the initiative marked a significant step in Governor Umo Eno’s drive to harness the state’s blue economy under the administration’s ARISE Agenda.

He urged the trainees to be good ambassadors of the state and warned that anyone involved in misconduct would be recalled.

He said, “I charge you to be of your best behaviour during the duration of the training. Be good ambassadors of the state, the government and your families. The government will not hesitate to recall anyone found culpable of any misconduct.

“I enjoin you to seize the rare opportunity to improve your lives and prepare for a brighter future. I appreciate Governor Umo Eno for prioritising human capacity development as a cornerstone for a greater Akwa Ibom.

“Remember that Akwa Ibom State is a brand, and we must all protect her image and the integrity of the governor in words and action.

In his remarks, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Chief Orman Esin, explained that the training was imperative to develop a qualified workforce to manage the state-of-the-art infrastructure being developed by the state government.

“The Marine industry is a very serious and sensitive industry. That is why the Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, deemed it necessary to train Akwa Ibom youths to be able to manage the infrastructures,” Esin said.

He revealed that the state government is currently constructing new ferry boats and revamping other critical assets to ensure a seamless takeoff of marine operations.

“We congratulate you, believing that you will come back with commendation,” Esin added.

The trainees, who were selected through the state’s ARISE Employment Portal, expressed gratitude for the opportunity and pledged to excel in their training and return to contribute to Akwa Ibom’s maritime development.
