Reno Omokri, a former presidential aide, has cautioned the Northern region against supporting Peter Obi, the former Labour Party presidential candidate, in his bid for the opposition coalition’s ticket. Omokri claims that Obi will not fulfill his promises to Northerners if they back him to become the coalition’s candidate and potentially win the presidency in 2027.
This warning follows Obi’s statement that he would agree to serve only one term as president before handing over power to the North. However, Obi clarified that there was no agreement for a joint ticket with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
In his response, Omokri warned that the North could face a fate similar to that of the Hausa Fulani in Cameroon after Ahmadou Ahidjo resigned as president in 1982 if they support Obi. He expressed his concerns in a post on X, stating, “If Arewa makes the mistake of backing the coalition and granting their presidential ticket to Peter Obi, they will experience the same outcome as Northern Cameroon after Ahmadou Ahidjo’s resignation on November 4, 1982. History has lessons to teach us.”
He pointed out that the Hausa and Fulani are among the most marginalized ethnic groups in Cameroon, and Paul Biya failed to honor the promises made to Ahidjo. Omokri also raised questions about the circumstances surrounding the death of Ahmed Gulak in Owerri in May 2021 and criticized Obi for not condemning the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) or their sit-at-home orders, which have affected millions of innocent Nigerians in the Southeast.
He further noted that in Nigeria’s most Islamic state, the seat of the Caliphate, Obi appointed Ifeanyi Ezeagu as his campaign coordinator for Sokoto and John Ezeigbe for Lagos. “This is the man asking for your support, promising just one term. A person who couldn’t keep a promise to Ojukwu is now expected to honor his commitment to Arewa? If you believe that, be prepared for the treatment similar to that of Cameroon.”
Despite his warnings, Omokri assured the North that they have a reliable ally in President Bola Tinubu, emphasizing Tinubu’s loyalty in supporting the former president to secure his own presidency.
