Elon Musk on Thursday, June 5, said that his company SpaceX will begin decommissioning its Dragon spacecraft “immediately” because of threats by President Donald Trump to cancel government contracts with Musk’s businesses.
But hours later, Musk said, “Ok, we won’t decommission Dragon,” after a X user urged him to “cool off and take a step back for a couple days.”
SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft serves as the company’s main vehicle for transporting both astronauts and cargo into orbit.
Backed by multibillion-dollar contracts with NASA, SpaceX regularly carries NASA crews to and from the International Space Station.
These missions are key to helping the agency sustain a continuous human presence on the ISS through its planned retirement in 2030.
Musk had earlier said he would decommission Dragon in light of Trump’s statement’s re cancelling contracts.
